Ground Faults - What is a Ground Fault?

In a solar array a Ground Fault consists of an electrical short circuit involving the ground, a current carrying conductor, or any piece of metal that is grounded.
Types of Ground Faults: (based on causation)

  • Short circuits between the ground and conductor cables. ie. Cable in a PV junction box contacting a grounded conductor
  • Cable Corrosion can lead to a Ground Fault based on the deterioration of the cable's insulation.
  • Cable Corrosion can occur due to weather conditions and outside interference.
